Apollo History
Apollo Optical Systems is built on a legacy of innovation.
The story begins in 1989, when Dr. G. Michael Morris, Dr. Dean Faklis, and Dr. Milton Chang co-founded Rochester Photonics Corporation (RPC)—a spin-off from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics. Their mission was to bring the emerging fields of diffractive and micro-optics from the research lab into widespread commercial use.
Through the 1990s, RPC advanced precision optical technologies with support from government programs (SBIR and DARPA TRP) and collaborations with commercial and defense partners. By 1999, the company’s technology was ready for broader commercialization, leading to its acquisition by Corning Incorporated and rebranding as Corning Rochester Photonics Corporation (CRPC).
CRPC focused on developing micro-optics for telecommunications and display systems—until the telecom crash of 2001 forced Corning to close CRPC in 2002.
Determined to preserve this unique expertise, Dr. Morris negotiated a management buyout that created Apollo Optical Systems (December 31, 2002) and RPC Photonics (May 2003).
Today, Apollo Optical Systems operates in a 21,000 sq. ft. facility in Rochester, NY, equipped with:
- Optical and mechanical testing labs
- Single-point diamond turning facilities
- Polymer injection molding and assembly lines
- A precision machine shop
- Advanced coating and metrology capabilities
