Optical Design
Integrated optical and mechanical design supports imaging, illumination, laser, LED, beam-shaping, and opto-mechanical systems with manufacturability considered from the outset.
Apollo Optical Systems helps teams move precision optical concepts from early prototypes to scalable production with integrated design, fabrication, coating, testing, and assembly. Drawing on Rochester, NY’s deep optics heritage, our engineers help manage complex performance requirements, select practical materials, and build a cost-effective path toward dependable production volumes for demanding medical, industrial, aerospace, and consumer applications.

Integrated engineering and manufacturing capabilities help advance precision optical products from validated prototypes into scalable production.

Independent simulations, optimization, and prototype validation identify aberrations and performance concerns before teams commit designs to production tooling and larger-scale manufacturing.
Single-point diamond turning creates custom prototype optics in plastics and metals, enabling practical evaluation of complex surfaces before production molding begins.
Polymer injection molding produces consistent optical components for low- and high-volume programs, including spherical, aspheric, Fresnel, diffractive, and diffuser surfaces.
Custom anti-reflective, filter, mirror, and beamsplitter coatings support UV, visible, and NIR applications on polymer and glass optical components.
In-house metrology and flexible assembly methods verify critical performance and support optical doublets, triplets, multi-element systems, and opto-medical devices.

We begin by understanding the optical function, environment, material needs, volume targets, and budget. This foundation aligns the design approach with the product’s real-world performance requirements and commercial objectives.

Apollo Optical Systems was created through a management buyout on December 31, 2002, building on the technology legacy of Rochester Photonics Corporation. That story began in 1989, when researchers from the University of Rochester’s Institute of Optics set out to bring diffractive and micro-optics from the laboratory into broader commercial use. Today, Apollo continues that pursuit from its 21,000-square-foot Rochester, NY facility. Our team connects optical and mechanical design with fabrication, coating, metrology, and assembly so programs can advance with fewer disconnects between concept and production. We serve demanding applications across medical and life sciences, defense and aerospace, industrial systems, automotive, lighting, and consumer markets. The goal is straightforward: help customers manage complexity, validate performance, and establish a reliable pathway to scale.
Optical manufacturing is the process of designing, fabricating, finishing, coating, measuring, and assembling components that control light. It can include lenses, mirrors, diffractive surfaces, microlens arrays, optical filters, and complete assemblies. At Apollo, manufacturing methods include single-point diamond turning, polymer injection molding, thin-film coating, precision metrology, and assembly selected around the product’s optical requirements and planned volume.
