Optical Design
Integrated optical and mechanical design for imaging, illumination, beam-shaping, laser, and LED systems, with design-for-manufacture considerations incorporated early.
Bring complex optical concepts closer to production with integrated prototyping support from Apollo Optical Systems. Our team combines optical and mechanical design, precision diamond turning, polymer molding, coatings, assembly, and metrology to help you evaluate performance before scaling. From a single custom component to a multi-element prototype, we build practical pathways that balance optical requirements, manufacturability, and cost.

Integrated design, fabrication, coating, assembly, and testing capabilities for evaluating precision optical concepts before production.

Single-point diamond turning produces small quantities of custom optical prototypes in polymers and metals, including aspheric, diffractive, Fresnel, toroidal, and spherical surfaces.
Injection-molded polymer optics provide repeatable prototype components and a practical bridge to low- or high-volume production, including doublets, triplets, and complex optical surfaces.
Thin-film AR, filter, mirror, and beamsplitter coatings for plastic and glass components support UV, visible, and NIR optical performance requirements.
Prototype assembly supports bonded, air-spaced, hybrid, and multi-element optical systems, using methods suited to one-of-a-kind builds through production-scale assemblies.
In-house metrology and testing measure critical mechanical and optical parameters, helping confirm surface quality, performance, and prototype conformance to design specifications.

We begin by understanding the optical function, operating environment, material needs, target volumes, and performance criteria. This early discussion identifies critical tradeoffs and establishes a practical technical direction for your prototype.
A connected technical and manufacturing partner for precision optical development.
Design, fabrication, coating, assembly, and metrology are coordinated under one experienced organization.
Built on Rochester photonics innovation, Apollo has operated independently since 2002.
Diamond turning, molding, coatings, and testing help address demanding optical requirements efficiently.
Design-for-manufacture reviews help align prototype performance with realistic production and budget objectives.
Optics specialists focused on practical, high-performance development.
Apollo Optical Systems carries forward a Rochester legacy in precision optics that began with Rochester Photonics Corporation, a University of Rochester Institute of Optics spin-off founded in 1989. After the organization’s Corning chapter ended, Apollo was established through a management buyout on December 31, 2002. Today, the team works from a 21,000-square-foot Rochester, NY facility equipped for precision optical design, diamond turning, polymer injection molding, coating, assembly, and metrology. Our vision is to help customers manage complex optical challenges with connected technical insight and manufacturing discipline. By bringing development and production capabilities together, Apollo helps turn promising concepts into testable prototypes and supports a more confident route toward scalable optical products.
The best optical design software depends on the application, analysis needs, and existing engineering workflow. ZEMAX®, CODE V®, and OSLO® are widely used for optical system modeling and optimization. Apollo Optical Systems has experience with these major optical design programs, alongside mechanical tools such as SOLIDWORKS®, AutoCAD®, Mastercam®, DIFFSYS®, and PTC Creo®, enabling integrated opto-mechanical development.
